Different Species of Ant Found in Perth

Our ant treatments involve spraying the outside with a chemical called Bifenthrin. We do a blanket spray outside to paved areas including the patio and driveway.   We then spray 1 metre up the walls and around all doors and window frames. On the inside we do a perimeter spray around the edge of each room using the chemical containing both Betacyfluthrin and Imadacloprid and then finally we use gel and granula baits inside in the areas where the ants are usually in the wet areas. On our arrival it is ideal for us to see the live ants inside which determines the bait we use. It is also important that you do not kill or clear any ants away before we arrive.

An alternative treatment is using the active ingredient Fipronil outside. The treatment is the same as above but instead of killing the ants immediately, this chemical is not detected by the ant which usually lives for around 24 hours in which time it contaminates other ants and eventually the queen which kills the whole colony.  It is a highly effective treatment and will reduce the ant population by around 90%. It is also important that you do not kill or clear any ants away before we arrive.

SOME OF THE DIFFERENT SPECIES FOUND IN PERTH

    ARGENTINE ANTS
Argentine ants range from light to dark brown and measure about 2.2 to 2.8 mm long. Their antennae have 12 segments

Argentine ants are readily adaptable and can nest in a great variety of places. Colonies are massive and may contain hundreds of queens. Nests are usually located in moist soil, next to or under buildings, along sidewalks or beneath boards. These ants travel in trails.

Argentine ants are omnivorous, meaning that they can eat almost anything, but they prefer sweet foods.

    BLACK ANT
These insects have developed a caste system where individuals are responsible for specialised duties within the community. There are workers (sterile female); fertile males; and queens (fertile females). Workers build and extend the nest, look after larval forms and forage for food. The Queens remain almost exclusively in the nest.

    COASTAL BROWN ANT
Nests mainly in soil and builds along pathways, in gardens, against walls, under houses and if in large enough numbers can cause damage to lawns.
Preference is for fatty foods but will attack seeds, meats, insects, fruit, honeydew from aphids, sweet foods, fats and grease. Adults cannot ingest solid food particle but ingest liquids which are pressed out of food material.

Small mounds from excavations near paths etc. can be considered unsightly. Trailing of ants can also be considered unsightly. Swarming can occur within premises which can cause distress to the occupants. Invasion of kitchen areas and wet areas can also be a nuisance to occupants. Plants and seedlings can be damaged if infestation is bad.
